New Hosur Airport Near Bengaluru: Land Acquisition & Clearance Process Begins

✅ What is planned

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new greenfield international airport at Hosur (Krishnagiri district), to serve both the Hosur region and southern Bengaluru / border zone.
The project is expected to span nearly 2,000 acres of land.
The capacity has been targetted at around 30 million passengers annually.

📍 Location & site status

A number of potential sites were under consideration. Among them: near the existing private airstrip of Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL) at Belagondapalli, and other sites near Ulagam / Shoolagiri region.
In August 2025 the government finalised a site in Shoolagiri taluk, between Berigai and Bagalur, around 15.5 km east of the TAAL airstrip.
Land acquisition is being planned for around 2,200-2,300 acres in this area.

⚠️ Key regulatory / constraint issues

One major hurdle: There is a concession agreement with the Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) / Government of India that no new international airport can be built within 150 km (aerial distance) of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033. Hosur falls within that radius.
Therefore, though the project can proceed with land-acquisition, surveys, approvals etc., commercial aviation operations may face timing / clearance constraints.
Clearance is needed from the Ministry of Defence (due to controlled airspace) and from other bodies (e.g., airspace clearance, obstacle surveys).

🕒 Timeline & next steps

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has conducted feasibility / OPTIONS surveys and shortlisted sites.
The government has instructed the Krishnagiri district administration to prepare land-acquisition plans.
Estimated time to completion is about 8 years, given the scale and regulatory hurdles.

💡 Strategic importance & impact

The project is intended to support and boost the industrial ecosystem in Hosur (auto, EVs, electronics) and neighbouring Tamil Nadu districts (Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri).
It will also improve connectivity for the Bengaluru metro / border region, relieving pressure on existing major airports and improving logistics for manufacturing.

They named him Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. No one knew then that this little boy, from a simple family, would one day rise to become the People’s President of India and one of the greatest scientists the world had ever seen. 🌅 Early Life: From Sand to Stars Kalam’s childhood was filled with struggles. He sold newspapers to support his family, yet he never let poverty crush his dreams. His curiosity and love for learning made him shine in school. His teachers recognized his intelligence and encouraged him to dream big — and dream he did! 🚀 Journey to Science After completing his studies in Physics at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and Aerospace Engineering at Madras Institute of Technology, Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and later Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Here, he played a key role in developing India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in orbit in 1980. This achievement marked the beginning of India’s journey in space technology. 🔥 The Missile Man of India Kalam’s work in developing Agni and Prithvi missiles earned him the title “Missile Man of India.” He led projects that made India self-reliant in defense technologies and played a crucial role in Pokhran-II nuclear tests (1998), which established India as a nuclear power. 🇮🇳 The People’s President In 2002, Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India.
