Chennai–Kancheepuram–Vellore RRTS: High-Speed Corridor to Cut Travel Time Under One Hour

Chennai–Kancheepuram–Vellore RRTS: High-Speed Corridor to Cut Travel Time Under One Hour
Tamil Nadu is set to take a giant leap in regional connectivity with the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) between Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Vellore. This ambitious semi-high-speed rail project aims to reduce travel time from Chennai to Vellore to under 60 minutes, revolutionizing travel and boosting economic growth across the region.
🌆 Project Overview
The Chennai–Kancheepuram–Vellore RRTS will span approximately 140 km, connecting the Chennai metropolitan area with key regional hubs in Kancheepuram and Vellore. The corridor will support train speeds of 160–200 km/h, offering a fast and comfortable alternative to road travel on the congested Chennai–Bengaluru Highway.
This project is part of three RRTS corridors being studied by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to create a high-speed suburban network across Tamil Nadu. The other two corridors are:
- Chennai → Chengalpattu → Tindivanam → Villupuram
- Coimbatore → Tiruppur → Erode → Salem
🚉 Key Features
- Corridor Length: ~140 km
- Design Speed: 160 – 200 km/h
- Estimated Travel Time: < 60 minutes (Chennai → Vellore)
- Expected Stops: At intervals of approximately 10 km for faster throughput
- Technology: Semi-High-Speed Electric Rail with advanced signalling
- Executing Agency: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)
- Feasibility Consultant: Balaji Railroad Systems Pvt Ltd (BARSYL)
🏗️ Project Status
CMRL has awarded consultancy contracts for preparing Detailed Feasibility Reports (DFR) for all three RRTS corridors. The Chennai–Vellore line’s feasibility study is currently underway at an estimated consultancy value of ₹72.88 lakh. Once the DFR is complete, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared to finalize alignment, stations, costs, and timelines.
⏱️ Timeline
- March 2025: Announced in the Tamil Nadu Budget
- July 2025: Consultancy contracts awarded
- Late 2025: DFR expected to be completed
- Next Phase: DPR preparation and Government of India approval
- Construction Start: To be announced post-clearances
💡 Benefits
- Travel Time: Chennai ↔ Kanchipuram in 20 minutes, Chennai ↔ Vellore in under 1 hour
- Reduced Traffic: Decongestion of Chennai–Bengaluru Highway
- Economic Boost: Better access for industries, education, healthcare, and tourism
- Regional Growth: Increased real-estate and job opportunities along the corridor
- Environmental Impact: Cleaner and faster public transport
📍 Regional Impact
The RRTS corridor will significantly transform Kancheepuram and Vellore into satellite growth centres, encouraging new investments in housing, retail, and infrastructure. With Vellore’s strong healthcare and education ecosystem and Kancheepuram’s industrial and heritage base, the corridor is expected to become a lifeline of South Tamil Nadu’s growth.
